10 Benefits of Retiring in Virginia

A woman walks her dog alongside our lakeThe first rule of real estate is just as important in retirement as it has been for other moves in your life: it’s all about location, location, location. As you look for the ideal spot to retire, consider how it may impact your interests, mental and physical health, bank account, and overall happiness. If you choose the Commonwealthof Virginia, you can truly have your cake and eat it too. Here are just a few reasons why you should consider a Virginia retirement community for your golden years:

  1. Mild year-round climate. Virginia enjoys a mild climate in all four seasons as well as 5 distinct climate regions. If you don’t like the weather where you are, you can easily plan a day trip, weekend getaway, or vacation in a nearby warmer or cooler region.
  2. Diverse outdoor recreation destinations. Virginia is home to an unusual variety of natural features, including beaches, mountains, valleys and rivers as well as 41 state parks and 22 national parks. You’ll have a virtually endless variety of natural destinations to explore if you’re a nature lover, outdoor recreation enthusiast, or just need to get out of town.
  3. Ranked among best places to live. Both as a state and as the home of many popular cities, Virginia is consistently ranked among the best places to live in the US—including for retirees. It ranks high for overall affordability, quality of life, and healthcare, all of which are key factors in choosing a retirement destination.
  4. Stable economy. Virginia has long enjoyed a stable economy. Even during the pandemic, its ties to the federal government economy in Washington, D.C. helped to shield it from downturns that occurred elsewhere in the country. A stable economy helps with price stability, which is especially important for retirees on a fixed income, because it allows them to plan their budget more reliably and enjoy greater peace of mind.
  5. Low crime. The state of Virginia is ranked among the safest states to live in; in fact, as of 2017, it was rated the 6th safest state in the country. You can find its safest communities here, although the list is not exhaustive. For example, Irvington in Virginia’s Northern Neck scores in the 84th percentile for safety out of all US cities.
  6. Tax-friendly for retirees. In addition to being a generally affordable place to live, Virginia is well known as one of the most tax-friendly states for retirees. The state does not tax Social Security benefits, and as of June 2022, it is offering a tax exemption to military retirees.
  7. Photo of oysters that are plentiful in RappahannockAccess to beaches and fresh seafood. Virginia is a coastal state, which means you can visit popular Virginia Beach or any one of the state’s other picturesque beaches and coastal state parks. Studies show that living near a beach naturally supports good mental health, and a seafood-rich diet is excellent for your physical health.
  8. Delicious Southern cuisine. In addition to fresh seafood (including oysters, soft shell crab, and rockfish), Virginia is known for many other delicacies: peanuts, country ham, barbeque, apples, and Brunswick stew. Farms in this state also grow a wide variety of healthy and delicious fresh produce, so if you love a good farmer’s market, you’re in for a treat. You can explore the state’s seasonal produce here.
  9. Gorgeous autumns. If fall is your favorite season, you’re in luck: Virginia has an unusually long and vibrant foliage season due in part to its temperate climate and many deciduous trees. Apple-picking is a popular fall activity in this state, and there are plenty of scenic fall destinations to explore. If you enjoy the spooky side of autumn, you’ll get a thrill in the #1 state in the National Register of Haunted Locations. You can choose from a wealth of fun haunted tours and haunted sites.
  10. Rich in history. If you’re a history buff, there are plenty of historic sites to visit and learn more about. Whether you’re interested in local, state, federal, or Civil War history, you’ll find plenty to keep your brain engaged, which is key to cognitive wellness for seniors.
