RWC offers new survey tool to help prospects assess readiness

Bill Estell, 83, is ready to move into Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury. He’s just waiting on the finishing touches to his two-bedroom, two-bath cottage that is being renovated with new paint, all new appliances, new hardwood floors and carpeting.

“I wanted to move to RWC, so I took the MoneyGauge survey on the website to make sure I was where I needed to be financially,” he said.

The decision to move to a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) is a big one. It involves answering several questions, including: How big is the retirement community? What services and amenities are available? How will my furnishings and belongings fit into my new home? And most importantly, do I have sufficient assets to pay the entrance fee and support the monthly fees?

MoneyGauge is meant to help answer this one.

Based on seven easy questions including age, income and assets, MoneyGauge generates a preliminary assessment to help with the decision-making process. The information is secure and not shared with any third-parties.

Estell sold his house on White Stone Harbour in Heathsville on a Tuesday, and two days later, he met his children for Jinny’s (his late wife’s) interment at the U.S. Naval Academy, which had been delayed for almost two years due to the pandemic.

“The house was a social center,” Estell said. “Friends came from all over to visit. Jinny was such a good innkeeper and one of the best cooks I’ve ever seen. My son was a little mad at me for selling the house, but I told him, ‘When your mother was here, this was a home. Now that’s she’s gone, it’s just a house.’”

Married for 58 years, but also high school sweethearts, the couple knew each other for 65 years.

“When Jinny died, I knew that it was time for me to move on. I’ve had a bundle of friends at RWC for a long time, and they kept asking me, ‘When are you coming? When are you coming?’ So, I took the tour, took the MoneyGauge survey, joined the Rapp Club and now I’m waiting for my cottage.”

Already familiar with the beauty and draw of the Northern Neck and with a bulwark of friends already at RWC, Estell didn’t look at any other retirement communities.

“I never found or heard about another place that measures up to RWC!” he said.

Lauren White, RWC’s Marketing Manager, is excited about this new tool that has helped prospective residents like Estell make the decision to make the move.

“This is such a quick and easy way for people to gauge their readiness to potentially sell their home and move into a CCRC – and hopefully, specifically RWC,” she said. “It’s quick and easy and seems to really help with the decision-making process.”
