Breakthrough Results in Safe Cannabis Use for Seniors

After Cannability Consulting launched in June 2023 and resulted in impressive results among seniors at Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, Dr. Alex Hill, Corporate Director of Quality Improvement, and Dr. Victoria Crenshaw, Senior Vice President of Health and Innovation, felt compelled to share the viability of cannabis for pain management with other area senior communities.

Hill will present the team’s findings at 1:30 p.m. July 23 at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury. This informative event is free and open to the public. A coffee reception will follow the presentation, so attendees can mingle and ask questions. To attend, RSVP to Amy Lewis at [email protected] or 804-438-4024.

“We saw many residents in healthcare relying on psychotropic drugs and recognized a need for alternatives,” Hill said. “Cannability Consulting was developed to provide a safer, more supportive option with CBD and hemp-derived products, and the results have been remarkable.”

Residents have reported varied successes, particularly in managing sleep disorders and chronic pain. One participant shared, “I use the products for sleep – not only to fall asleep but also to stay asleep. I no longer take any Western pharmaceuticals and feel significantly better.”

Hill will guide attendees through evidence-based cannabis practices, emphasizing the importance of safe usage and considering the evolving perceptions surrounding cannabis in society. The session will cover the human endocannabinoid system, regulatory issues, and practical advice tailored for seniors interested in exploring cannabis use responsibly.

Cannabis, historically accepted and used in earlier generations, is gaining renewed interest as older adults seek effective alternatives to manage chronic conditions such as arthritis, insomnia, and pain. Cannability Consulting aims to dispel myths and offer reliable, scientifically-backed information about cannabis and its therapeutic potentials.

“I’ll share a story of one person that mirrors the story of many – someone who had been seeking pain management for an extensive length of time to relieve their chronic pain due to multiple things going on – between fibromyalgia to compressed discs to arthritis pain, sort of the kitchen sink of pain issues,” Hill said. “They wanted to be able to take a non-opioid pain medication and be more clear-minded. Through coming to us and receiving education and supportive guidance, they were not only able to reduce the amount of opioid pain medication they were taking but also see greater pain relief. It was so powerful that then their spouse and adult children came to see us for their own respective issues.”

Cannability Consulting offers a range of educational, consultation, care navigation, and community outreach services related to wellness, the human endocannabinoid system, and cannabinoids. Their goal is to empower individuals and healthcare providers with awareness, literacy, and safety using evidence-based literature to guide dissemination efforts and abide by state and federal laws.
